NCLEX Exam Day: What to Expect and How to Prepare
The days leading up to your NCLEX exam can be filled with anticipation and anxiety. Having a clear plan for exam day eliminates unnecessary stress and allows you to focus entirely on performing your best.
What to Bring
You must bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID with your signature. The name on your ID must match your NCLEX registration exactly. Bring your Authorization to Test (ATT) confirmation (printed or accessible on your phone for reference, though you will not need it inside the testing room). Do not bring study materials, electronic devices, food, or drinks into the testing room as these are stored in a locker.
At the Testing Center
Arrive 30 minutes early. You will check in with a digital photograph, palm vein scan, and signature verification. You will be assigned a workstation with a computer, a small whiteboard or laminated note board, and a marker. You may not bring anything else to your workstation. The test administrator will explain the rules and start your exam. You will have up to 5 hours for the NCLEX-RN (including the tutorial and all breaks).
During the Exam
You will receive a minimum of 85 questions and a maximum of 145 questions on the NCLEX-RN. An optional break is offered after question 85. Take it to use the restroom, stretch, and reset your focus. Read each question carefully and answer thoughtfully. Do not rush and do not spend too long on any single question. Once you submit an answer, you cannot go back. Trust your preparation and first instinct when you have studied the material.
Last-Minute Tips
Stop studying 24 hours before the exam. Get 7-8 hours of sleep. Eat a balanced breakfast with protein and complex carbohydrates. Avoid excessive caffeine.
