NCLEX Guide for International Nursing Graduates
International nursing graduates (INGs) face additional steps beyond NCLEX preparation to practice nursing in the United States. Understanding the credential evaluation process, certification requirements, and immigration considerations is essential for a smooth transition.
CGFNS Certification Program
The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) offers a certification program required by many states before NCLEX eligibility is granted. The CGFNS Certification Program includes a credentials evaluation of your nursing education and licensure, a qualifying exam testing nursing knowledge, and an English language proficiency requirement. Some states accept the CGFNS VisaScreen Certificate alone, while others require the full certification program. Check your target state requirements early in the process.
Credential Evaluation
Your nursing education must be evaluated against US nursing education standards. This process verifies that your education is comparable in theory and clinical hours to a US nursing program. You will need to submit official transcripts, nursing school curriculum details, licensure verification from your home country, and evidence of clinical hours completed. The evaluation process can take several months, so begin early. Some states use CGFNS for evaluation while others accept evaluations from agencies like WES (World Education Services).
English Language Proficiency
Most pathways require demonstrating English proficiency through one of the following: TOEFL iBT (minimum scores vary by state and program), IELTS Academic (typically minimum 6.5-7.0 overall), or TOEIC (some states accept this). English proficiency requirements may be waived for graduates of nursing programs taught in English in certain countries including the UK, Australia, and Canada. Prepare thoroughly for these exams as they are a common bottleneck in the process.
State Board Application and NCLEX
After credential evaluation, apply to your target state board of nursing for licensure eligibility. Once approved, register with Pearson VUE for the NCLEX. The NCLEX exam itself is the same for international and domestic graduates. Your preparation should focus on US nursing practice standards and NCLEX-specific content and question formats.
